About Clinic

trip_InfoClinicIMR has traveled to Haiti for medical camps more than twenty times since the 2010 earthquake. Haiti has made a remarkable move toward recovery in the last two years, but health care for the poor is still an overwhelming need. Although there has been an international effort to lend support since the earthquake, Haiti still remains the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. This trip is one of the few where IMR holds clinics in an urban environment. Cholera, tuberculosis, malaria, acute illnesses, infectious disease, and diarrheal disease continue to plague the regions we work in and the new communities we add to each visit. We always have a high patient load in Haiti, and this trip will not be an exception. You will work in Port-au-Prince and surrounding communities, including some of the mountain villages. Our teams average more than 2,000 patients on each trip and see many tropical diseases including leishmaniasis, leptospirosis, lymphatic filariasis, and many large acute and chronic wounds. We also treat many acute illnesses, infections, and motor vehicle accidents. Women are particularly at risk in Haiti, with sexually transmitted diseases, personal violence, and pre-eclampsia common. Children are often malnourished, covered with scabies, and infected with parasites. Dental care is one of the greatest needs in our patients. We frequently partner with local medical and dental students and recent graduates to share knowledge and provide follow-up for our patients.

Transportation & Lodging

You will arrive during the day on November 21. If you arrive in the morning, you may choose to go to right clinic and get to work! If you arrive later in the day, you will be taken to the hotel where you can get some rest and begin preparing for clinics on November 22, 23, and 24th. Departures are early on November 25 - this is not a clinic day. You will receive specific information regarding your arrival, meeting the team, and departure upon becoming an official member of the team. To make it easy, your transportation to and from the airport will be provided for you. You will purchasing your own international ticket for this trip. We recommend arriving as early as possible the fist day for maximum clinic time!! The team will stay in modest, comfortable accommodations. The primary hotel compound is gated, has private security, a wonderful restaurant, air conditioning, and a pool. Haiti is an excellent trip choice for families with younger children because of the accommodations. Modern buses or vans will transport the team to clinics each day. Small, open Jeeps will occasionally transport the team to smaller villages.

Trip Highlights

The highlight of your time in Haiti is in clinic! You will talk about the vibrant and boisterous crowds, significant needs of your patients, and the opportunity to make a difference upon your return home. There is ample shopping — hammered tin, beautiful paintings, edgy paper mâché vases, and lovely small carvings — from all over Haiti and the Caribbean. The shopping itself is exciting with rapid-fire bargaining and friendly competition among the sellers. Join IMR for a remarkable experience, a mere two and a half hours from the coast of Florida.

Extend Your Stay

Take advantage of several convenient and affordable excursions in the Dominican Republic, Bahamas, and surrounding areas. Beautiful white sand beaches and sunsets over the Caribbean will create the perfect ending to your trip. Delve further into the spirit of this region of the world by tasting the diverse foods that are distinctive to each culture. The Dominican Republic boasts beaches, a fertile inland scattered with waterfalls, mountains, jungles, and even remote deserts. The Caribbean offers an amplitude of geographical diversity, great for travelers with wide eyes and short on time!

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the donation amount include?

The donation amount covers the cost of lodging, meals, and transportation while you are in the country, and clinic supplies/medications for our patients. If you are eligible for and choose the Subsidized IMR Flight, your donation amount also includes the cost of your international airfare. Costs that are not included in the donation amount are your passport, travel visas (if applicable), domestic airfare to the group departure city, vaccinations, and insurance. You also have the option of flying on your own directly from your hometown and meeting up with the team in country. IMR gives you the option of purchasing your own tickets, which decreases your minimum donation amount. It also gives you the opportunity to extend your stay to do some sightseeing after the trip, and fly directly from your home city to your final destination.

What will the team be doing on the trip?

IMR teams provide medical care and community health education to communities that lack access to care. A typical IMR team consists of doctors, nurses, EMTs, medical/nursing students, pre-med students, and non-medical volunteers. We strive to have a dental team on every trip as well. The team usually stays in a central location and travels each day to a different community to set up a mobile medical clinic. In order to promote lasting and sustainable improvements in the health of those communities, IMR conducts an extensive community health education program in each area as well. No matter what your specialty or skill level, there is a job for you on an IMR trip!

Can I fundraise for the trip?

Yes!  Many volunteers fundraise for trips.  Once your references are approved, IMR will send a fundraising packet that contains information on how the personalized fundraising page on the IMR website works.  It also contains some great ideas for fundraising events and other ways to fundraise for the trip.  IMR is a 501(c)3 charity, and all donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Trip Preparation

A service that we are very proud of at IMR is the preparation that each team and team member receives prior to the trip. This is one of the most important reasons that you should join an IMR team.

All team members receive a detailed briefing packet outlining the important elements that make a successful trip, packing lists, and a checklist to keep you on track. You will receive detailed information on how clinic operates, the roles on an IMR team, community health education topics, fundraising, and access to a personal IMR fundraising page. Best practices for providing care in short term medical clinics, public health information specific to the country you are traveling too, and a guide to the infectious diseases of that country will be shared with the team. You will also receive a comprehensive country briefing packet that provides background information, cultural etiquette, common phrases, and links to additional information from a variety of sources. Finally, a departure packet that outlines how and where to meet your team will be sent just prior to departure.

IMR applicants and team members will also have access to a series of phone conferences where you will learn about specific aspects of IMR trips and 2 Q and A calls where you can ask questions specific to your trip. There will also be a Q and A call just prior to departure to help ensure that you have the most important information and are ready to go!

Most importantly, we are always here to answer your questions or help you complete your application. It is our goal that we exceed your expectations for preparation, patient care, and your overall trip. Let us know how we can help and how we did!
