International Medical Relief is committed to helping the indigenous communities of our world. Our goal is to provide health care to those in remote areas who otherwise have greatly limited chances of survival if their illnesses are not diagnosed and treated. In Panama the team will have a rare opportunity to care for the native tribes of Ngobe Bugle whose villages line the isolated seaside. The total population in Panama is just over 1 million people and of that group less than five percent are among the native tribes still surviving amongst the poverty. According to the World Health Organization, provinces with a predominantly indigenous population exhibit the worst conditions: mortality from diarrhea was five times the national rate of 6.4; the country’s incidence of cholera was 80 times the nationwide level and the incidence of pneumonia was 6 times the nationwide rate. The IMR team will help ensure that these tribes survive and have the health care that they need – we combat these acute illnesses along with many more through medicines and education.
