Our medical mission team to Brazil lived for the week on a riverboat that allowed us to deliver acute medical care to villages along the water.
One of the highlights of the week was a home visit by one of our doctors and two of our nurses to see an elderly brother and sister. The man had been a paraplegic all his life and our team was able to treat his ear and skin infections and make sure he was properly hydrated. His sister was his primary caregiver, and we were able to help her with much-needed medication for high blood pressure. We were amazed to see the love and support the siblings and other family members showed for each other and were pleased to be able to offer them care.
In one village, the community was so anxious for our arrival that they let school out for the morning so we could see the children in clinic. They learned about nutrition and received gifts of toothbrushes and soap.
Our efficient pharmacy team made sure there was never a long wait for medications that our patients needed and there were plenty of reading glasses available to help patients who needed them get a new view on the world.
