About The Mission Trip

trip_InfoAboutWhy Borneo?  According to a recent article (March 2018), the conditions in the health centers are “dire” with almost half of the 209 health centers not staffed by a doctor and a quarter without power and/or running water.  According to a different publication during the same timeframe, the situation is “going from bad to worse.” This is in stark contrast to the private healthcare available in the major cities, where 33,400 “medical tourists” were treated last year.  Our role is to provide care to those who are unable to access care due to distance and poorly equipped heath centers in the most rural part of the region.

Inaugural trips are always fantastic!  IMR works closely with highly experienced local hosts and our host in Borneo is exceptional.  We will work in 5 different communities this week and will get an actual overview of the health of the community as a whole.  Each night we will sleep in the “long house” - the community meeting area - so don’t forget your sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and free-standing mosquito net.  You will truly live in the communities we will be serving in and will be able to see a lot of village life.  Women who are skilled in the use of local plants and herbs will provide an evening talk during the week and if you look closely, you’ll see curious eyes peering around the corner.  Do those eyes belong to curious village children or ??.  Don’t worry, either way, it will be the experience of a lifetime!   We have some amazing things planned for you!

About Clinic

trip_InfoClinicThis trip is about community.  You will be in the heart of small village life in the middle of the remote jungle.  We will see families on this trip - not just the insular family but the big extended families that form the heart of Borneo.

The patients you will see will have conditions ranging from rashes to joint pain, lymphatic filariasis to leptospirosis, schistosomiasis to GERD. Burns are common from the open cooking fires and serious wounds are normal occurrences in clinic each day. Excruciating dental pain is common as are eye problems including cataracts, ptergyia and infections.  We will see many pregnant women and the children will capture your hearts. Working in the villages is very special and our patients will celebrate your visit as the great event that it is.

The Ministry of Health and local providers will support us while we are in Borneo.  You will have the opportunity to partner with young physicians who value providing service to patients for whom medical care is not accessible. Our translators will be top tier and service oriented.  You will find that Borneo wants your help - please join IMR in providing our patients with skilled and compassionate care.

Transportation & Lodging

trip_InfoLodgingThis is trip set apart by the cultural experiences you will have in Borneo. Staying in the communities is unforgettable - there’s a little adventure in your future while you have the chance to see how your patients live!  Don’t worry - IMR will be there every step of the way to ensure you have everything you need to make this a great experience! Transportation will be a bit varied - think vans, 4x4s, and boats - but always handled by professionals, highly experienced in working in the jungle.

Trip Highlights

trip_InfoHighlightsThe families in the communities you serve are the highlight of this trip and you will have many cultural experiences to talk about when you get home.  Working with some fine young healthcare workers is the heart of sustainability and you will love working with some of the up and coming healthcare workers of Borneo.  Be The Good!!

You will also join your team members on a visit to a beautiful orangutan preserve - get ready to have some fun!  You’ll have some great photo ops (and maybe a selfie?!) while learning about these endangered animals and getting in a bit of hiking at the same time.  This will certainly be another highlight of your trip!

Oh - did we mention the sunsets?  See the photo!

Extend Your Stay

trip_InfoExtendedStayYou’re venturing around the globe, have you considered extending your stay a few additional days to visit some of Borneo’s top spots? This medical/dental mission starts and ends in Kuching, Malaysia (Airport Code: KCH).  This trip is located on the island of Borneo.

****Sleeping bag sleeping pad, and a free-standing mosquito net are required on this trip.  A tent is optional as you will be sleeping in the community’s long house.  While it is not glamping, you won’t be roughing it either. Some of the best food of your life will be waiting for you, cooked with care by the communities you serve.  To learn more, read the Lodging and Transportation section on the Borneo information page.

March 1, 2020: Plan your arrival in Kuching for the afternoon of March 1, 2020 by 4:00pm!  If you are flying on the IMR group flight, your transportation is included in the ticket cost.  If you are flying independently, please contact our office at office@imrus.org if you wish to arrange transportation to your hotel for a small fee.  There will be an orientation meeting and a team dinner in the evening to prepare you for the days ahead.   This will be a trip to places where tourists simply don’t go and we can't wait to travel with you to one of the truly wild places left in the world.  Read on to learn more!!

Meals Included: Dinner       Overnight: Hotel in Kuching

March 2, 2020:   Wake up to breakfast provided to you at the hotel and prepare for your team orientation! Your team leader will assign your roles for clinic, go over our clinic protocols, and further prepare you for your week of serving many communities in the jungle of east-central Borneo.  You will also get an overview of the health care system in Borneo by one of our hosts. We will have a bit of a drive to the area we will be working in so get ready to see the wild beauty of Borneo today!

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner    Overnight: Village

March 3 - March 7, 2020:  CLINICS!

You will work in different communities each day on this wonderful trip.  Each day will be different but all will be filled with sick patients including lots of children, beloved elderly parents, revered aunts and uncles, and more.  Healthcare in the jungle is not easily accessible in Borneo. The entire community will come for medical and dental care, health education to make their families stronger, and for the sheer joy of visiting with neighbors, friends, and relatives.  You will be part of it all - and along the way, we’ll learn about some of the plants and herbs that are used daily by the villagers to improve their health. You and your team will see some tropical diseases that you may have only read about - lymphatic filariasis, malaria, dengue (usually treated by drinking a tea made from Bitter Melon) and the number 1 most common disease, bacterial and protozoal diarrhea.  Education about how to prevent mosquito-borne diseases will be critical on this trip.  The majority of patients you will care do not have access to adequate sanitation or clean water; you will work together with local community leaders, health center workers, physicians and dentists to be the difference in these communities.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner    Overnight: Village from March 3 - March 6.

March 7: Return to Kuching after clinic for a hotel overnight prior to seeing the orangutans in Kuching! '

'Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner    Overnight: Hotel in Kuching

March 8, 2020:  Get ready to see Orangutans!  And sadly, your departure from this beautiful country…

Your day today will be on an orangutan preserve near Kuching.   This description is from the Semenggoh website: For over 20 years, the wardens at Semenggoh Nature Reserve have been training young orangutans, who had been orphaned or rescued from captivity, how to survive in the wild. The success of this programme has left the surrounding forest reserve with a thriving population of healthy adolescent and young adult orangutans, who are now breeding in the wild. The programme has since been transferred to Matang Wildlife Centre, but Semenggoh Nature Reserve is still home to its successful graduates, semi-wild orangutans and their babies. They spend most of their time roaming the forest but frequently come back to the Centre for a free meal. If it is the fruiting season in the forest, some or even all of them may not come to feed. This in itself is a good sign and another step on the way to full rehabilitation.

Here are some orangutan viewing tips!

Ask questions and ask your guides to stop if you want to take a photo or observe for a few minutes

Even if you are a shutterbug, bring a pair of binoculars!

Sunscreen, Sunglasses, Hat, and Deet!  - put them in your backpack along with a bottle of water and a snack 🙂

You will be hiking on trails - wear good footwear and have a small daypack to carry a bottle of water, your camera, etc.  This will help keep your hands free.

If you want a true trekking experience, join the “extended stay option” to trek to find the wild orangutans of Borneo!  https://worldwidenavigators.com/trips/borneo-orangutan-expedition/

After our time with the Orangutans in Kuching, we will have a celebratory lunch and head to the airport for flights home. Your time in Borneo has come to an end but we hope that you will travel with International Medical Relief again soon!   If you are flying independently, you can arrange transportation to the airport via Worldwide Navigators or travel on your schedule. If you are flying independently, please do not book your flights home till late afternoon on March 8 to ensure that you have time to experience the orangutans!

IMR teams provide medical and dental care and community health education to communities that lack access to care. A typical IMR team consists of doctors, dentists, and advanced practice providers, nurses, EMTs, medical/dental/nursing students, pre-med students, and non-medical volunteers.  The team makeup for your trip is not guaranteed to be as described above and is dependent on the individual volunteers who make up your team.  The team usually stays in a central location and travels each day to a different community to set up a mobile medical and dental clinic. In order to promote lasting and sustainable improvements in the health of those communities, IMR conducts an extensive community health education program, teaching about prevention and treatment in small groups and during individual consultations with providers. No matter what your specialty or skill level, there is a job for you on an IMR trip!

Trip Preparation

A service that we are very proud of at IMR is the preparation that each team and team member receives prior to the trip. This is one of the most important reasons that you should join an IMR team.

All team members have access to the IMR Volunteer Resources page where you may view and download important conference calls, a detailed briefing packet outlining the important elements that make a successful trip, packing lists, a checklist to keep you on track, and much more. You will find detailed information on how clinic operates, the roles on an IMR team, community health education topics, fundraising tips, and all of the materials our licensed providers need including best practices for providing care in short term medical clinics, public health information specific to the country you are traveling too, and a guide to the infectious diseases of that country.  You will also find a comprehensive country briefing packet that provides background information, cultural etiquette, common phrases, and links to additional information from a variety of sources on your volunteer resources page.  Finally, a departure packet that outlines how and where to meet your team will be sent just prior to departure and can be downloaded from the volunteer resources page.

IMR applicants and team members are also able to join in two informational calls: About IMR and How Clinic Operates/Provider Guidelines.   A Q and A call just prior to departure helps to ensure that you have the most important information and are ready to go!  If you can't join our live calls, you can listen at any time via your Volunteer Resources page.  Your team's departure call will be recorded by and sent by email to the team immediately following the call.

All of our volunteers have access to a personal IMR fundraising page with a unique URL that can be emailed and shared with family, friends, business associates, and other potential donors.

Did you know you can earn CME credits on line with IMR?  www.cmeonline.net will get you to 6 1 hour courses containing great tips for treating a variety of conditions in the field including wounds, hypertension, dengue fever, and more.

Most importantly, we are always here to answer your questions or help you complete your application. It is our goal that we exceed your expectations for preparation, patient care, and your overall trip. Let us know how we can help and how we did!
