About The Mission Trip

trip_InfoAboutThis will be IMR’s 3rd visit to Honduras, a country known for its natural beauty and extreme poverty, with more than 50% of the population destitute. Major risk factors include high unemployment and inadequate public education. Many schools have up to 80 children in a classroom with one teacher. Of all the children entering 1st grade, only 30% are still in school by 6th grade and only 8% continue to the university level. Health care is almost nonexistent in the rural areas of the country where your IMR team will work.

The towns where we will care for patients have a high prevalence of diseases transferred by mosquitoes such as malaria, dengue, and recently chikungunya, especially during the months right after rainy season when we will be there. Due to the lack of clean water and sanitation methods, diseases such as skin rashes/ infections, ear, eyes, nose and throat infections, respiratory infections, influenza, heartworm, and diarrhea are seen daily in adults and children. Oral hygiene is nonexistent and dental care is of critical importance. These are health issues you can significantly impact through excellent patient care and health education. Please join us!

About Clinic

trip_InfoClinicIn the indigenous communities where we will work, there are no doctors or dentists, hospitals, or functional clinics.  We'll work in small schools that will show you first hand the abject poverty of the area, if the malnutrition of the children isn't enough of a clue.  If you want to make a difference, come on this trip.

In the small towns we will visit on the 2nd half of our trip, most of the medical care and all of the dental care requires payment for services.  The small hospital in the area also has small resources, is a car ride away, and is over-run. Your IMR team is the hope for the health of the children in these towns and communities.

Radio, TV, posters, and word of mouth will all be used to tell everyone that clinic is happening - and patients will prepare for weeks for our arrival.  In the indigenous communities, the pastors are the biggest influence along with those members of the communities who have horses; they will ride far and wide to spread the word.  The towns have determined that the real way to spread the news is through the school children. Every school child will receive a letter to take home, outlining the day and location of our team. The churches will announce our visit and ensure that even the homebound know that we will come to them. Home visits are some of the best medicine we provide and some of the most fun for our team! Expect a crowd; there will be no shortage of patients here. Doctors, dentists, nurses, EMS, counselors, and non-medical staff are all needed; OB-GYNs, Dermatologists, Pediatricians, and Pediatric Dentists are in especially high demand.

One of the best parts of this trip are the local doctors, dentists, and nurses who will join our team and work side by side with you.  On our second trip we were joined by 8 amazing young doctors and dentists, all seeking to help the people of their homeland and to expand and share their skills, knowledge, and passion for our patients.

Transportation & Lodging

trip_InfoLodgingThe IMR team will be based in two distinct areas:  the indigenous communities approximately 5 hours from Tegucigalpa and a small town about 3 hours from the capital, Tegucigalpa. You will fly into Tegucigalpa where you will meet your team at the airport and drive to the indigenous communities that have been waiting for more than a year to welcome you. The rainy season will have ended prior to your visit, and temperatures in the low 80s will make your working conditions perfect! Your hotel lodging will be comfortable, clean, and safe.

Honduran cuisine is a cocktail of multiple ancient cultures like Maya, Lenca, and Garifuna. Besides African and Caribbean influences, Spanish flavors also play an important part in making the local cuisine a favorite around the world. Carne Asada, Pastelitos de carne (meat pies - yum!), Baleadas (Traditional flour tortilla with a sumptuous filling of cheese, avocados, beans, and sometimes with scrambled eggs and ground beef), Yojoa fish, corncakes wrapped in banana leaves, arroz con leche, and the famous Honduran Horchata (A simple drink of rice, water, cinnamon, sugar, vanilla and milk added afterward) will make you wishing you never never have to leave.

Trip Highlights

trip_InfoHighlightsThe highlight of this trip is certainly the indigenous communities and the townspeople, who can not wait to open their doors and hearts to your IMR team. But of course, there is more! Parque Nacional Sierra de Agalta, owned by the town itself, will be a highlight of your visit. There are 8 famous waterfalls that combine for a drop of over 150 feet! Cuevas de Talgua caves - the "cave of the glowing skulls" - is one of the most important sites for cave burials in the Mayan world. A guided tour to see the wonderful formations in this cave will leave you absolutely amazed! And have no fear, there's the shopping! Wonderful local crafts and markets abound!

In the evenings, will visit restaurants, sing some karoake, and join the people of Honduras in some family time.  You'll love this trip!

Trip Itinerary

This itinerary is subject to change without notice

October 17, 2020: You will arrive and meet your team the morning of October 17, 2020 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.  Please arrive by early afternoon (no later than 1PM) so that we can depart for the indigenous area of Montana la Flor.  We will transfer to our accommodations in the indigenous communities and will meet as a team in the early evening to prepare you for clinic and the patients you will see.  We can't wait to get started!

One of the most exciting things about this trip are the indigenous communities you will serve in.  You can expect hundreds of patients each day - most families will have 5 - 6 children -  who get no care due to the remote locations of their communities and their own desire to live simply.  In addition to working with the indigenous communities, we will also work in small remote towns, again making a tremendous difference to the health of the community with dental care, medical care, and education.

We will also work with local Honduran doctors, dentists, nurses, and public health experts on this trip and the learning exchanges are a true highlight of your time in Honduras.

October 18 - 19, 2020: Indigenous Communities.

These are clinic days and they will be busy.  The bus rides will be amazing  and the people of these indigenous communities will welcome you with open arms and a display of their traditional crafts.  There will be many families of multi-generations and more children than you can count.  You'll get to meet everyone the community before the day is over!  There will be many acute cases presenting to you.  Hypertension and diabetes are not the major concerns in these communities but malnutrition is a deadly and very real concern for the children and the elderly.

Lodging:  Simple, safe accommodations with bunk beds, excellent food, and the opportunity to see some of the truly magnificent beauty that is Honduras.  Dietary needs are easily accommodated.

October 20, 2020: Transfer to Santa Maria del Real and sightseeing:

You will transfer to Santa Maria del Real today by bus in the morning and upon arrival will have the chance to stretch your legs with a nice hike to explore the town's jewel - an amazing cave that is wet, young and growing.  You'll learn how the cave was discovered and much more about "tites" and "mites" and "flows" and "bows".  Don't forget to look up - otherwise you might miss the faces looking back at you!!  There is also an amazing museum of mesozoic art from the area.  Following a bit of caving, we'll take the trucks up the mountain to take a short hike - the beauty of this place is astounding.  And after all that?  Well, we haven't mentioned the food yet, have we?  Dinners throughout the week will be a culinary treat - your clinic days will be rewarded with homemade ice cream by a famous ice cream maker in town and lots of fun at dinner and beyond.

Lodging: Lodging is at a friendly resort, complete with a pool, restaurant, and bar.  It is family owned and that's how you will be treated - like family!  Don't forget to say hi to the turtles (las tortugas!) every morning as you enter the restaurant and get ready for some karaoke in the evenings!  Bring your suit - the pool has a slide!!

October 21 - 23, 2020: Rural Small Town Clinics.

The last 3 days of clinic will be held in small, remote towns around the very small town, Santa Maria del Real.  Many volunteers from the town's government will join us in clinic to provide support with registration and more.  Our work does not go unnoticed here and the town wants to do everything they can to ensure the success of our clinics and our stay.  You can expect 100's more patients for our last three days. You'll see smaller families, more elderly patients, some hypertension and diabetes, and more during these busy clinic days.

Food is quite varied in this area - meats, cheeses, yuca, and many varieties of sweets and homemade ice cream will be found.  The Carne Asada is considered to be the best in the country and there are many varieties of tacos, baleada (filled flour tortillas), chicharrónes, and more.  If you like wine, give the local Coyol wine, made from a local alcoholic palm tree, a try.  Local beers are also great.

October 23, 2020:  After clinic we will transfer to Tegucigalpa for flights home on October 24th.

October 24, 2020: Departures.

This morning you will say goodbye to your new family and many new friends you shared your week with.  It will be hard to leave - the beauty of Honduras and the soul of her people will stay with you. We'll see you again next year!!

What will the team be doing on the trip?

IMR teams provide medical and dental care and community health education to communities that lack access to care. A typical IMR team consists of doctors, dentists, and advanced practice providers, nurses, EMTs, medical/dental/nursing students, pre-med students, and non-medical volunteers.  The team makeup for your trip is not guaranteed to be as described above and is dependent on the individual volunteers who make up your team.  The team usually stays in a central location and travels each day to a different community to set up a mobile medical and dental clinic. In order to promote lasting and sustainable improvements in the health of those communities, IMR conducts an extensive community health education program, teaching about prevention and treatment in small groups and during individual consultations with providers. No matter what your specialty or skill level, there is a job for you on an IMR trip!

Can I fundraise for the trip?

Yes!  Many volunteers fundraise for trips.  You can find information and tips on how to fundraise on your Volunteer Resources page on the IMR website.  You will have access to a personal fundraising page with a unique URL that you can share with family, friends, business associates, and any potential donors via social media.   IMR is a 501(c)3 charity, and all donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Trip Preparation

A service that we are very proud of at IMR is the preparation that each team and team member receives prior to the trip. This is one of the most important reasons that you should join an IMR team.

All team members have access to the IMR Volunteer Resources page where you may view and download important conference calls, a detailed briefing packet outlining the important elements that make a successful trip, packing lists, a checklist to keep you on track, and much more. You will find detailed information on how clinic operates, the roles on an IMR team, community health education topics, fundraising tips, and all of the materials our licensed providers need including best practices for providing care in short term medical clinics, public health information specific to the country you are traveling too, and a guide to the infectious diseases of that country.  You will also find a comprehensive country briefing packet that provides background information, cultural etiquette, common phrases, and links to additional information from a variety of sources on your volunteer resources page.  Finally, a departure packet that outlines how and where to meet your team will be sent just prior to departure and can be downloaded from the volunteer resources page.

IMR applicants and team members are also able to join in two informational calls: About IMR and How Clinic Operates/Provider Guidelines.   A Q and A call just prior to departure helps to ensure that you have the most important information and are ready to go!  If you can't join our live calls, you can listen at any time via your Volunteer Resources page.  Your team's departure call will be recorded by and sent by email to the team immediately following the call.

All of our volunteers have access to a personal IMR fundraising page with a unique URL that can be emailed and shared with family, friends, business associates, and other potential donors.

Did you know you can earn CME credits on line with IMR?  www.cmeonline.net will get you to 6 1 hour courses containing great tips for treating a variety of conditions in the field including wounds, hypertension, dengue fever, and more.

Most importantly, we are always here to answer your questions or help you complete your application. It is our goal that we exceed your expectations for preparation, patient care, and your overall trip. Let us know how we can help and how we did!
