This trip offers special features or exclusive opportunities unique from standard IMR experiences.

About The Mission Trip

trip_InfoAboutClose your eyes and picture looking to your left to see towering, snow-capped mountains, and then looking to your right to see lush, green foliage. If you concentrate, can you hear the infectious Hindustani music or taste freshly caught fish? As the seventh-largest and second-most populous country in the world, it is not surprising that India offers a wide variety of sightseeing, topography, and cultural experiences. Shaped by the Himalayan Mountains, Northern Plains, the Indian Desert, Peninsular Plateau, coastal plains, and many islands, India is the land of "Unity in Diversity." Among the people, diversity in race, religion, and language exists, but their vast differences in culture do not divide them. Although our clinic locations for this trip will be set up in more remote areas of the country, many city residents cannot afford the out-of-pocket expenses associated with subsidized healthcare. During this trip, IMR will help to bring much-needed aid and education to the people in Agra, West Bengal, who have the most challenging time accessing medical treatment.

West Bengal alone homes over 91 million people and your time here will seem to bring you close to all of their hearts. At first glance, West Bengal appears to be thriving. With over ten degree-offering universities, specific schools for medical professionals, an active agricultural economy, two World Heritage sites, and plenty to see and do, this Indian State has a lot to offer to its visitors. However, behind the day-to-day bustling is the daily struggle that many of West Bengal's residents face. Behind the dazzling street light and freshly painted buildings lies a world of abject poverty. The majority of West Bengal's people live in rural villages and must survive off approximately 38 cents per day, which makes high-quality living nearly impossible. Despite their hardships, the Bengali people are both positive and inspirational. Bengali culture is considered one of the richest cultures in India, and the people you meet here will be eager to share their traditions with you.

About Clinic

trip_InfoClinicThe clinics that you volunteer at will be set up in smaller, remote villages. Our primary goal of this trip is to care for locals with treatable and often preventable conditions. As such, much of the relief you provide at clinic will be for people who would have benefited from access to preventable care. At clinic, you will treat conditions related to dengue fever, hepatitis, malaria, pneumonia, and digestive diseases. You can also expect to see problems associated with poor water quality and dehydration.

You will also educate locals on how to stay healthy and care for their loved ones. However, one of the primary focuses of this mission is dentistry. All community members are encouraged to attend; therefore demand for dental care will be high. Because the World Health Organization reports that India is still recovering from a strikingly high infant mortality rate, another focus of this mission is women's healthcare. We will provide general women's and infant care, as well as empower women to seek higher education.

Transportation & Lodging

trip_InfoLodgingAll three of your hotels will be safe, clean, comfortable, and homey. IMR will arrange transportation to and from your hotel to your clinic locations. For those on the group flight, your transportation to and from the airport will be arranged on your behalf. If you are flying independently and wish to have airport transportation coordinated for you, please inquire for pricing and availability.

Trip Highlights

trip_InfoHighlightsYou will leave India feeling connected to the people that you help during clinic, and this feeling will undoubtedly be the highlight of your trip. In this humbling but rewarding service opportunity, you will work with isolated communities who will be eager to connect with you. Your time in the villages will allow you to appreciate the local culture and will provide you with a chance to connect with the people you treat on a deeper level.

While the most rewarding aspect of this trip will be caring for the people of India, the team will also have the opportunity to visit some of the country's top attractions. The trip's highlights include exploring the city of Old and New Delhi, watching the sunrise at the Taj Mahal, touring the walled city of Agra's Red Fort, and taking lessons from locals on how to cook authentic Indian cuisine.

Extend Your Stay

trip_InfoExtendedStaySince you are already venturing across the globe, have you considered extending your stay by a few days to see India's most intriguing destinations? Did you know IMR offers an exclusive three-day extension to its volunteers? By continuing your stay, you will give yourself an extended opportunity to explore Delhi and to go on a safari in Northern India! While there are over 103 National Parks in India, IMR will arrange for you to go on a highly rated, guided safari that will take you through a tiger reserve. The Ranthambore National Park is the most prominent in India, and is world-famous for its big cat viewing opportunities! While on the multi-day safari, you will spend time viewing these magnificent predators in their natural habitat, and lucky safari-goers will even catch glimpses of the hunting habits of the tigers.

IMR teams provide medical and dental care and community health education to communities that lack access to care. A typical IMR team consists of doctors, dentists, and advanced practice providers, nurses, EMTs, medical/dental/nursing students, pre-med students, and non-medical volunteers.  The team makeup for your trip is not guaranteed to be as described above and is dependent on the individual volunteers who make up your team.  The team usually stays in a central location and travels each day to a different community to set up a mobile medical and dental clinic. In order to promote lasting and sustainable improvements in the health of those communities, IMR conducts an extensive community health education program, teaching about prevention and treatment in small groups and during individual consultations with providers. No matter what your specialty or skill level, there is a job for you on an IMR trip!

Trip Preparation

A service that we are very proud of at IMR is the preparation that each team and team member receives prior to the trip. This is one of the most important reasons that you should join an IMR team.

All team members have access to the IMR Volunteer Resources page where you may view and download important conference calls, a detailed briefing packet outlining the important elements that make a successful trip, packing lists, a checklist to keep you on track, and much more. You will find detailed information on how clinic operates, the roles on an IMR team, community health education topics, fundraising tips, and all of the materials our licensed providers need including best practices for providing care in short term medical clinics, public health information specific to the country you are traveling too, and a guide to the infectious diseases of that country.  You will also find a comprehensive country briefing packet that provides background information, cultural etiquette, common phrases, and links to additional information from a variety of sources on your volunteer resources page.  Finally, a departure packet that outlines how and where to meet your team will be sent just prior to departure and can be downloaded from the volunteer resources page.

IMR applicants and team members are also able to join in two informational calls: About IMR and How Clinic Operates/Provider Guidelines.   A Q and A call just prior to departure helps to ensure that you have the most important information and are ready to go!  If you can't join our live calls, you can listen at any time via your Volunteer Resources page.  Your team's departure call will be recorded by and sent by email to the team immediately following the call.

All of our volunteers have access to a personal IMR fundraising page with a unique URL that can be emailed and shared with family, friends, business associates, and other potential donors.

Did you know you can earn CME credits on line with IMR? will get you to 6 1 hour courses containing great tips for treating a variety of conditions in the field including wounds, hypertension, dengue fever, and more.

Most importantly, we are always here to answer your questions or help you complete your application. It is our goal that we exceed your expectations for preparation, patient care, and your overall trip. Let us know how we can help and how we did!
