About The Mission Trip

trip_InfoAboutClose your eyes and picture looking to your left to see towering, snow-capped mountains, and then looking to your right to see lush, green foliage. If you concentrate, can you hear the infectious Hindustani music or taste freshly caught fish? As the seventh-largest and second-most populous country in the World, it is not surprising that India offers a wide variety of sightseeing, topography, and cultural experiences. Shaped by the Himalayan Mountains, Northern Plains, the Indian Desert, Peninsular Plateau, coastal plains, and many islands, India is the land of “Unity in Diversity.” Among the people, diversity in race, religion, and language exists, but their vast differences in culture do not divide them. Mumbai, the capital city of the state of Maharashtra in India and the city you will stay in for this trip, is the most populated city in India so you will interact with folks from many different backgrounds. However, over half of the city practices Hinduism, so you can expect to experience several Hindu traditions, including theatre, festivals, and food.

While visiting, you can tour countless Hindu Temples such as the most famous temple in the city, Mahalakshmi! Your team will also make a point to visit the Muslim quarter to experience the blended culture and purchase fresh produce. Your time in Mumbai will be especially memorable because it will coincide with Holi, a time for Hindus to welcome the spring season and to celebrate love and the triumph of good over evil. Also referred to as the festival of colors, Holi is one of the most brilliant festivals that Hindus celebrate. From rain dances to water guns filled with liquid color to Holi-special restaurant menus, the Holi festivities are a blast! For a colorful and memorable keepsake, wear a white t-shirt during the celebration. During Holi, keep in mind that the people whom you have the opportunity to laugh and dance with may also be some of the people you help during clinic. Because many residents cannot afford the out-of-pocket expenses associated with subsidized healthcare, IMR will help to bring much-needed aid and education to the people in India who have more difficulty accessing medical treatment.

About Clinic

trip_InfoClinicThe World Health Organization estimates that 2.4 million Indian citizens died from treatable conditions in 2018. The primary goal of this trip is to care for locals with treatable and often preventable conditions. At clinic, you will treat conditions related to malaria, nutritional problems, and self-inflicted injuries. Since water quality is a prevalent issue in India, you can also expect problems associated with poor water quality, dehydration, and diarrheal diseases.

You and the rest of the volunteer team will also educate locals on how to stay healthy and how to care for their loved ones. One of the main focuses of this mission is dentistry. Because all community members are encouraged to attend, the demand for dental care will be high. Because the World Health Organization reports that India is still recovering from a strikingly high infant mortality rate, another focus of this mission is women’s healthcare. We will provide general women’s and infant care, as well as empower women to seek higher education.

Transportation & Lodging

You and your team will be staying at the YMCA in Mumbai with comfortable, safe, and clean accommodations. If you are interested in a more upscale lodging experience, please view the Signature option here.

Transportation to and from clinic will be provided each day. If you travel on the group flight, all of your airport transportation to and from the hotel will be pre-arranged. For those flying into Mumbai independently, you have the option to include your airport transportation for an additional charge through our partner, here.

Trip Highlights

trip_InfoHighlightsThe lasting connections that you make with the people of Mumbai within and out of clinic will undoubtedly be the highlight of your trip. By celebrating goodness at Holi with some of the same people you may treat at clinic, you will find yourself completely submerged in Indian culture. If you are lucky, some of your newly made friends will teach you a Bollywood Dance that you can, in turn, teach your friends back home.

While the most rewarding aspect of this trip will be caring for the people of Mumbai, your team will also have the opportunity to visit the famous Gateway of India, an iconic, 85-foot arch that is often referred to as the “Taj Mahal of Mumbai.” This architectural wonder may very well be one of your favorite sites to see!

Extend Your Stay

trip_InfoExtendedStaySince you are already venturing across the globe, have you considered extending your stay by a few days to see India’s most intriguing destinations? Did you know IMR offers an exclusive three-day extension to its volunteers? By extending your stay, you will give yourself an extended opportunity to take a short flight to Delhi, where you can explore cultural sites, including Agra and the Taj Mahal. Other sites, including the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and the Lotus Temple, are easy to access and friendly for tourists. While in Delhi, you can also shop the famous Chandni Chowk Market, founded by the fifth Mughal Emperor over five hundred years ago. In Old Delhi, you can visit the Chandni Chowk Market and the Red Fort, tour Jama Masjid, and explore the stunning Lotus Temple.

Check out the IMR volunteer-exclusive extension opportunities available for your mission here! For additional information, please contact our preferred travel agency, Worldwide Navigators. Their team of experienced agents and travelers is available via email at

IMR teams provide medical and dental care and community health education to communities that lack access to care. A typical IMR team consists of doctors, dentists, and advanced practice providers, nurses, EMTs, medical/dental/nursing students, pre-med students, and non-medical volunteers.  The team makeup for your trip is not guaranteed to be as described above and is dependent on the individual volunteers who make up your team.  The team usually stays in a central location and travels each day to a different community to set up a mobile medical and dental clinic. In order to promote lasting and sustainable improvements in the health of those communities, IMR conducts an extensive community health education program, teaching about prevention and treatment in small groups and during individual consultations with providers. No matter what your specialty or skill level, there is a job for you on an IMR trip!

Yes!  Many volunteers fundraise for trips.  You can find information and tips on how to fundraise on your Volunteer Resources page on the IMR website.  You will have access to a personal fundraising page with a unique URL that you can share with family, friends, business associates, and any potential donors via social media.   IMR is a 501(c)3 charity, and all donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Trip Preparation

A service that we are very proud of at IMR is the preparation that each team and team member receives prior to the trip. This is one of the most important reasons that you should join an IMR team.

All team members have access to the IMR Volunteer Resources page where you may view and download important conference calls, a detailed briefing packet outlining the important elements that make a successful trip, packing lists, a checklist to keep you on track, and much more. You will find detailed information on how clinic operates, the roles on an IMR team, community health education topics, fundraising tips, and all of the materials our licensed providers need including best practices for providing care in short term medical clinics, public health information specific to the country you are traveling too, and a guide to the infectious diseases of that country.  You will also find a comprehensive country briefing packet that provides background information, cultural etiquette, common phrases, and links to additional information from a variety of sources on your volunteer resources page.  Finally, a departure packet that outlines how and where to meet your team will be sent just prior to departure and can be downloaded from the volunteer resources page.

IMR applicants and team members are also able to join in two informational calls: About IMR and How Clinic Operates/Provider Guidelines.   A Q and A call just prior to departure helps to ensure that you have the most important information and are ready to go!  If you can't join our live calls, you can listen at any time via your Volunteer Resources page.  Your team's departure call will be recorded by and sent by email to the team immediately following the call.

All of our volunteers have access to a personal IMR fundraising page with a unique URL that can be emailed and shared with family, friends, business associates, and other potential donors.

Did you know you can earn CME credits on line with IMR? will get you to 6 1 hour courses containing great tips for treating a variety of conditions in the field including wounds, hypertension, dengue fever, and more.

Most importantly, we are always here to answer your questions or help you complete your application. It is our goal that we exceed your expectations for preparation, patient care, and your overall trip. Let us know how we can help and how we did!
