About The Mission Trip

trip_InfoAboutSituated at 3,400 m (11,150 ft), Cusco is a beautiful city of whitewashed walls, red-tiled roofs, and soaring churches nestled in a fertile mountain basin. If you'd like to explore a bit, you can head to the Plaza de Armas to experience the social heart of this bustling city. As you walk through town, stop in for a visit to Koricancha Temple, the Main Square, Sacsayhuaman Fortress, Puca-Pucara and finally, a visit to the Inka’s Expression Art Workshop where you will see local Andean Artists at work.

Your IMR team will provide medical care to various communities surrounding the city of Cusco and in the Sacred Valley. This is an area where traditional medicine dominates and we will have an opportunity to learn about the botanicals used by local healers. You will also have an opportunity to learn about the rich culture of this beautiful and unique area, where the people are passionate about their religion, crafts, and corn!

About Clinic

trip_InfoClinicYour clinics will be varied both by location and the people you will serve! You will work in the Cusco area and among the people you will treat and care for are the Quechua people.  The Quechua work the land, and will come to clinic with a variety of complaints, including back pain, dry eyes, and infections.  Nutrition is an issue, with potatoes and fats as the staple ingredient in their diet.  In their traditional dress, you will find the Quechua to be warmhearted and grateful for your care.

The World Bank and the World Health Organization stated in a 2009 study that the indigenous people of Peru are viewed as needing full assistance to solve their multiple health problems . IMR is working in collaboration with local partners in the high country of the Andes to help the indigenous people by providing medical and dental care and health education. Illness in these communities is made much worse from a lack of knowledge about how to manage their healthcare, resulting in needless deaths among this already diminishing population.

The top 10 illnesses in a study done in 2017 found that the most common diagnosis were parasites, headaches, osteoarthritis (20% of the population is > than 60y), gastritis, GERD, UTI, and vaginitis. Dental caries are particularly troublesome. Interestingly, hypertension and diabetes are not.prevalent in this area of the country, regardless of the aging population. What does this mean for you? You will be able to make a significant difference in the health of the people you care for!

Transportation & Lodging

trip_InfoLodgingYou will be working in the area around Cusco on this trip and will stay in a lovely 3 star hotel close to the center of Cusco.  Transportation to clinic will be by bus and the rides will be beautiful!

You will love the regional food! If you are adventuresome, you might want to cuy (guinea pig) but lamb, chicken, pork, sausages, and chalona (a dried meat) are easily found if you are not in the mood for cuy. Sweet potatoes, scrumptious stews of assorted vegetables with or without meat are amazing, Corn and cheeses in many varieties will be on all the menus -try the corn fritters! If you are a soup lover, Cusco is famous for Chiaro, a soup made with beef or lamb and vegetables. and for Lawa Soup, a cream soup made with ground corn, cheese, eggs, and potatoes. Did we mention the ice cream? Save room for the regional desserts!

Trip Highlights

trip_InfoHighlightsA true highlight of this trip is working with the Quechua people.

What will the team be doing on the trip?

IMR teams provide medical and dental care and community health education to communities that lack access to care. A typical IMR team consists of doctors, dentists, and advanced practice providers, nurses, EMTs, medical/dental/nursing students, pre-med students, and non-medical volunteers.  The team makeup for your trip is not guaranteed to be as described above and is dependent on the individual volunteers who make up your team.  The team usually stays in a central location and travels each day to a different community to set up a mobile medical and dental clinic. In order to promote lasting and sustainable improvements in the health of those communities, IMR conducts an extensive community health education program, teaching about prevention and treatment in small groups and during individual consultations with providers. No matter what your specialty or skill level, there is a job for you on an IMR trip!

Trip Preparation

A service that we are very proud of at IMR is the preparation that each team and team member receives prior to the trip. This is one of the most important reasons that you should join an IMR team.

All team members have access to the IMR Volunteer Resources page where you may view and download important conference calls, a detailed briefing packet outlining the important elements that make a successful trip, packing lists, a checklist to keep you on track, and much more. You will find detailed information on how clinic operates, the roles on an IMR team, community health education topics, fundraising tips, and all of the materials our licensed providers need including best practices for providing care in short term medical clinics, public health information specific to the country you are traveling too, and a guide to the infectious diseases of that country.  You will also find a comprehensive country briefing packet that provides background information, cultural etiquette, common phrases, and links to additional information from a variety of sources on your volunteer resources page.  Finally, a departure packet that outlines how and where to meet your team will be sent just prior to departure and can be downloaded from the volunteer resources page.

IMR applicants and team members are also able to join in two informational calls: About IMR and How Clinic Operates/Provider Guidelines.   A Q and A call just prior to departure helps to ensure that you have the most important information and are ready to go!  If you can't join our live calls, you can listen at any time via your Volunteer Resources page.  Your team's departure call will be recorded by and sent by email to the team immediately following the call.

All of our volunteers have access to a personal IMR fundraising page with a unique URL that can be emailed and shared with family, friends, business associates, and other potential donors.

Did you know you can earn CME credits on line with IMR? will get you to 6 1 hour courses containing great tips for treating a variety of conditions in the field including wounds, hypertension, dengue fever, and more.

Most importantly, we are always here to answer your questions or help you complete your application. It is our goal that we exceed your expectations for preparation, patient care, and your overall trip. Let us know how we can help and how we did!
