About The Mission Trip

trip_InfoAboutRwanda, in east-central Africa, is surrounded by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Tanzania, and Burundi. Steep mountains and deep valleys cover most of the country. Rwanda’s history, past and recent, contains a mixture of tragedy and triumph, and you will find the locals resilient, bright, and warm-hearted.

This trip is full of amazing opportunities! You can volunteer to provide medical and dental care in Rwanda, go on a wonderful 1 day safari included in your IMR trip and then join with other like-minded volunteers for an AMAZING trek to find and commune with the very endangered mountain gorillas. About Clinic

trip_InfoClinicRwanda’s principal health problems include dysentery, malaria, and acute infections left untreated. Chronic communicable diseases needing education include infectious hepatitis, tuberculosis. and HIV as well as hypertension and diabetes. You will find that your efforts make a tangible difference as you treat many patients with infectious disease, large wounds, and a great deal of mosquito and water/fecal-borne illnesses.

Clinic is in a great location on this trip. We partner with a fantastic school to provide us with the room we need to care for the many hundreds of patients we will see. You will also stay at the school which means more patient time and less travel time! Here, you will have the opportunity to take a short hike through the village to the communal well, where you will see the true need for public health and understand a lot about how your patients live. A visit to the weekly goat market will also tell you a lot about village life. Goats provide your patients with their milk, cheese, and meat and are an important part of the daily rhythm in this village.

The people of Murindi walk or use bicycles for transportation and generally stay within their village area. Common illnesses include skin infections including scabies, and dermatitis, tinea corpus, ringworm, and other fungal infections. Respiratory issues are also common. You may also attend to bicycle injuries and other advanced skin and soft tissue infections. Educational dental care and primary care services are desperately needed. This underserved population lacks meeting basic health needs. Children and adults carry drinking water several times a day from a common community spigot where water is obtained down a steep muddy hill in 40-pound containers. Their average meal consists of cooked rice, local porridge or bananas gathered from their local trees. Due to the lack of a variety of balanced meals, there is a huge malnutrition problem. Stunting in Rwanda is caused by chronic malnutrition, and in Rwanda, 47% of rural children are stunted, along with 27% of urban children. We bring vitamins, deworming medicines and most importantly, sustainable education on proper hygiene and a myriad of other topics. Approximately 25-35%of the population complained of severe oral pain due to abscesses and dental carries.

Transportation & Lodging

trip_InfoLodgingIncluded in our Signature Trip, our team will have the opportunity to stay at the infamous Hotel des Mille Collines, also known as Hotel Rwanda. Since 1973, Hotel des Mille Collines has provided luxurious accommodation to travelers in the "land of a thousand hills" and in 1994, saved over 2,000 lives during the Genocide against the Tutsi. You and your team members will be provided with transportation to and from the hotel each day to bring you to meet your fellow team members for clinic (this transfer typically takes around 45 minutes). Each night, you will be able to eat traditional meals prepared by our hosts at Hope Haven, or take transportation back to your hotel for a decadent meal at the hotel. You won't want to miss out on this special opportunity to stay at Hotel des Mille Collines.

Trip Highlights

trip_InfoHighlightsThis trip includes a historical tour of Kigali and a safari at Akagera National Park! Your historical tour includes the museum and memorial for the Rwandan genocide, where you will be able to pay respects to those lost. The museum sets out the history leading up to the genocide and brings the somber realities of the atrocities to life. In understanding the roots of this history, you will appreciate just how far the country has moved on together in the last two decades. It also plays a vital role in educating Rwanda’s new and future generations about the genocide.

You will also take a hike to the village well early one morning before clinic - and perhaps help the children carry the jerry cans of water up the hill? It will be a wonderful learning opportunity for you about the struggles of having drinking water at your home every day. Don't worry, your IMR team will be teaching everyone about CLEAN drinking water.

Another highlight will be the visit to the goat market. Don't forget your camera on this early morning adventure before clinic! We know you were just thinking you needed a goat to keep your pup company. Now's your chance! Bring your wallet!

While on safari, you will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with elephants, African buffalos, zebras, antelopes, impala, primates, and some of the 500 species of birds in the park! You may have the breathtaking experience of seeing leopards and lions there! This will be an all day journey. Hat, sunscreen, camera, closed toed shoes, and EYES WIDE OPEN are the order of the day!!

Day two will be the highlight of your trip— or maybe year, as you hike the mountain rainforest and spend some time with the famed mountain gorillas. There’s no guarantee how long or short your trek will be, as it depends on the gorillas and weather, but you can expect a reward more precious than gold as you observe these magnificent creatures as they relax, play and feed in the heart of the jungle.

May 16th, 2020 - Arrivals

You and the team will fly into the Kigali International Airport on August 3rd and transfer to your accommodation in Kigali. The required arrival time to land in Kigali is 5:00pm on May 16th. 

In the evening you will have a team dinner and will participate in an orientation and clinic training with your team leader. Your team leader will assign your roles for clinic, go over our clinic protocols, and discuss the communities you will be serving in Rwanda.

May 17th - 21st, 2020 - Clinics

Wake up each day and have breakfast at your accommodation. Most of the clinics will take place at the orphanage as IMR provides transportation to the communities of the people that want to be seen.

At our clinics in Rwanda, you can expect to see many people greatly in need of the community health education and acute medical and dental care provided by IMR. In clinic, you will find that your efforts make a tangible difference as you treat many patients with infectious disease, large wounds, and a great deal of mosquito and water/fecal-borne illnesses.

On the evening of the 21st, you can expect to transfer to a safari lodge closer to Acagera to ensure an early start for safari the next morning!

May 22nd, 2020 - Safari Day!

After the past four clinic days, depart for a day safari at Akagera National Park, located in Eastern Rwanda. Don't forget to bring your camera as you will be able to see the giraffes, Impalas, Topis, the Zebras, bushbucks, African swallows, eland, the vervet monkeys, warthogs, baboons, Mongoose, the hippos, the crocodiles, as well as the elephants.

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel then bid farewell to beautiful Rwanda as you head to the airport for your international flight home.

    • The scholarship is first come, first served.  We only have a few on every trip!
    • Priority is given to group flight ticket holders but independent fliers are also welcome to apply!

    • You will receive the funds in the form of a rebate check after your IMR bags have been received at the IMR warehouse following your trip.
    • How It Works...
        • You will be notified via email if you been chosen to receive the IMR bag scholarship!
        • If chosen, you will receive the IMR supply bag(s) to the address provided in your application within a week of departure
        • We will email you prepaid shipping labels to return the bags to us once you're back in the US! All you have to do is drop the bag off at your nearest UPS office!
      • Note:
        • You are responsible for any checked baggage charges on your domestic and international tickets (check your baggage policy with your airline)
        • Bags may weigh up to 50 lbs and are not always on rollers
        • You will receive a rebate check for $300 approx. 4-6 weeks after returning your bag(s) following your trip (using your pre-paid UPS mailer).

  • Submit your flight choice as “economical” or “premier” in your account.
  • Approve the ticket that IMR is going to purchase on your behalf and complete the purchase with IMR's approved travel agency.
  • The cost of airport transfers are included in the cost of your ticket!

After Feb 18th, 2020: You may still be able to join the group flight on a space-available basis only

    • Pay 2,250 of the total cost AND upload all of your required documents and forms by Feb 18th, 2020
    • Contact the office to see if group tickets are still available.
    • Submit your flight choice as “economical” or “premier”, approve the ticket, and complete the purchase with IMR's approved travel agency.  
    • The cost of airport transfers are included in the cost of your ticket!
    • You will need to purchase your domestic roundtrip ticket after your international flight is ticketed and confirmed.

What are the sleeping arrangements?
  • Triple or double twin bed rooms are standard on IMR trips. This is part of our safety and security policies.
  • Each volunteer has their own bed (no shared beds outside of couples). 
  • Let  the IMR Office know if you are a family or couple.  We always try to accommodate our volunteer’s needs!  Please use the link to email our office. 
  • IMR does not discriminate in any way – please let us know your rooming needs.  
  • Please understand if we are unable to accommodate your specific needs based on availability at the hotel or lodging on your trip.

What will the team be doing on the trip?

IMR teams provide medical and dental care and community health education to communities that lack access to care. A typical IMR team consists of doctors, dentists, and advanced practice providers, nurses, EMTs, medical/dental/nursing students, pre-med students, and non-medical volunteers.  The team makeup for your trip is not guaranteed to be as described above and is dependent on the individual volunteers who make up your team.  The team usually stays in a central location and travels each day to a different community to set up a mobile medical and dental clinic. In order to promote lasting and sustainable improvements in the health of those communities, IMR conducts an extensive community health education program, teaching about prevention and treatment in small groups and during individual consultations with providers. No matter what your specialty or skill level, there is a job for you on an IMR trip!

Can I fundraise for the trip?

Yes!  Many volunteers fundraise for trips.  You can find information and tips on how to fundraise on your Volunteer Resources page on the IMR website.  You will have access to a personal fundraising page with a unique URL that you can share with family, friends, business associates, and any potential donors via social media.   IMR is a 501(c)3 charity, and all donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

      • IMR Group Flight: In order to qualify for the IMR Group Flight, you will need to reach 50% of the required donation on or before Feb 18th, 2020.

Yes!  We encourage our volunteers to extend their stay and explore.  Extending your stay also puts money into the economies of these developing countries!

Trip Preparation


A service that we are very proud of at IMR is the preparation that each team and team member receives prior to the trip. This is one of the most important reasons that you should join an IMR team.

All team members have access to the IMR Volunteer Resources page where you may view and download important conference calls, a detailed briefing packet outlining the important elements that make a successful trip, packing lists, a checklist to keep you on track, and much more. You will find detailed information on how clinic operates, the roles on an IMR team, community health education topics, fundraising tips, and all of the materials our licensed providers need including best practices for providing care in short term medical clinics, public health information specific to the country you are traveling too, and a guide to the infectious diseases of that country.  You will also find a comprehensive country briefing packet that provides background information, cultural etiquette, common phrases, and links to additional information from a variety of sources on your volunteer resources page.  Finally, a departure packet that outlines how and where to meet your team will be sent just prior to departure and can be downloaded from the volunteer resources page.

IMR applicants and team members are also able to join in two informational calls: About IMR and How Clinic Operates/Provider Guidelines.   A Q and A call just prior to departure helps to ensure that you have the most important information and are ready to go!  If you can't join our live calls, you can listen at any time via your Volunteer Resources page.  Your team's departure call will be recorded by and sent by email to the team immediately following the call.
