About The Mission Trip

trip_InfoAboutCome and join the IMR team as we continue our work with our Trinidadian and Tobagonian partners to help improve the quality of life for this incredible nation. Upon arrival, the locals will proudly welcome you with their bright, Caribbean spirit. During your visit, you will enjoy authentic cuisine that is comparable to Creole, but made with local, bold spices. 

Trinidad is home to boisterous carnivals and calypso music, the Caroni Swamp where you can view the rare Scarlet Ibis in the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, a 40-acre mangrove island located inside a 15,000-acre swamp! The birds are most active during the last two hours of daylight, so we'll be sure to go and catch the golden sunset at the sanctuary.  You will also have time to visit the Hanuman Temple during your stay.      

About Clinic

trip_InfoClinicIn Trinidad and Tobago, there are not enough healthcare providers or facilities to serve the population.  While the island does have health centers, many are understaffed and undersupplied and although though most of the existing healthcare services are free, patients are frequently unable to obtain care, even on an emergency basis. To help provide quality medical care to all citizens, IMR sends volunteers to remote areas of the country to provide quality health care and medical services. Our mobile clinics offer assistance to children, women, families, the elderly, and other in-need populations.  

You and the rest of the volunteer team will educate locals on how to stay healthy and how to care for their loved ones. Together, we will treat a wide variety of acute and chronic illnesses including dengue fever, hepatitis, malaria, pneumonia, and digestive diseases. However, one of the major focuses of this mission is dentistry. Because all community members are encouraged to attend, demand for dental care will be high. Another focus of this mission is women’s healthcare. We will provide general women’s and infant care, as well as strengthen the knowledge and skills of the local midwives. We expect a high patient load in the highly populated slum communities we will be serving in. With 1.2 million people and a population density of 266 per sq. km, and only 1 doctor per 1,000 people, our services are needed!    

Transportation & Lodging

The team will fly into Piarco International Airport, just a few minutes from your hotel.  Clinic locations are already set in a variety of locations on the island, all serving patients with the greatest need. Transportation will be by private coach with safe, professional drivers. We can't wait to have you with the IMR T and T Team!!

If you are adventurous at heart, you can zipline, explore the rainforest, or snorkel in the country’s crystal-clear waters. No matter what you choose to do, the bands will delight you and the calypso-style dancing will get your feet tapping!

March 21, 2020: Arrivals

You and the team will fly into Piarco International Airport (POS). The required arrival time to land in Piarco is 2:00pm on March 21stUpon arrival, your team will transfer to your nearby hotel where you can check-in and freshen up. The evening will be spent meeting your fellow team members and participating in a team orientation. Your team leader will assign roles for clinic, address IMR’s clinic protocols, and discuss the communities you will be serving. Rest up before an exciting week ahead!

March 22 - March 26, 2020: Clinic
Rise early for clinic each morning. You’ll work hard, long, and very rewarding days!  You will have the opportunity to work in some of the poorest communities on the island.  

In the evenings, you will have a chance to soak in the rich culture of this incredible island. Steelpan drums and Calypso dancing await!

March 27, 2020: Cultural Day 

Today is your day to indulge in the local Caribbean spirit! You will have time to lounge on some of the most picturesque beaches, browse local markets and craft stands for treasures to take home! In the evening you will come together for your farewell dinner where you will enjoy authentic Caribbean cuisine!

The Caroni Swamp is home to the Scarlet Ibis, the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago.  Join IMR as a thank you for your service to see the incredible nesting area of the Ibis, Herons, and more at dusk as you travel by small boats with knowledge guides who were responsible for saving these birds from habitat loss in the last 25 years.

March 28, 2020: Departure Home
Sadly, the time has come to say goodbye. Enjoy a final breakfast with your team and one last dip in the hotel pool. Airport transportation is provided for all group flyers.

  • We need your help to take IMR supply bags internationally to Trinidad & Tobago!
    • The scholarship is first come, first served.  We only have a few on every trip!
    • Priority is given to group flight ticket holders but independent fliers are also welcome to apply!
    • Apply for the scholarship on your account page.
    • You will receive the funds in the form of a rebate check after your IMR bags have been received at the IMR warehouse following your trip.
    • How It Works...
        • You will be notified via email if you been chosen to receive the IMR bag scholarship!
        • If chosen, you will receive the IMR supply bag(s) to the address provided in your application within a week of departure
        • We will email you prepaid shipping labels to return the bags to us once you're back in the US! All you have to do is drop the bag off at your nearest UPS office!
      • Note:
        • You are responsible for any checked baggage charges on your domestic and international tickets (check your baggage policy with your airline)
        • Bags may weigh up to 50 lbs and are not always on rollers
        • You will receive a rebate check for $300 approx. 4-6 weeks after returning your bag(s) following your trip (using your pre-paid UPS mailer).

  • Approve the ticket that IMR is going to purchase on your behalf and complete the purchase with IMR's approved travel agency.
  • The cost of airport transfers are included in the cost of your ticket!

After Dec 24th, 2019: You may still be able to join the group flight on a space-available basis only

    • Pay 1,700 of the total cost AND upload all of your required documents and forms by Dec 24th, 2019
    • Contact the office to see if group tickets are still available.
    • Submit your flight choice as “economical” or “premier”, approve the ticket, and complete the purchase with IMR's approved travel agency.  
    • The cost of airport transfers are included in the cost of your ticket!
    • You will need to purchase your domestic roundtrip ticket after your international flight is ticketed and confirmed.

What are the sleeping arrangements?
  • Triple or double twin bed rooms are standard on IMR trips. This is part of our safety and security policies.
  • Each volunteer has their own bed (no shared beds outside of couples). 
  • Let  the IMR Office know if you are a family or couple.  We always try to accommodate our volunteer’s needs!  Please use the link to email our office. 
  • IMR does not discriminate in any way – please let us know your rooming needs.  
  • Please understand if we are unable to accommodate your specific needs based on availability at the hotel or lodging on your trip.

What will the team be doing on the trip?

IMR teams provide medical and dental care and community health education to communities that lack access to care. A typical IMR team consists of doctors, dentists, and advanced practice providers, nurses, EMTs, medical/dental/nursing students, pre-med students, and non-medical volunteers.  The team makeup for your trip is not guaranteed to be as described above and is dependent on the individual volunteers who make up your team.  The team usually stays in a central location and travels each day to a different community to set up a mobile medical and dental clinic. In order to promote lasting and sustainable improvements in the health of those communities, IMR conducts an extensive community health education program, teaching about prevention and treatment in small groups and during individual consultations with providers. No matter what your specialty or skill level, there is a job for you on an IMR trip!

Can I fundraise for the trip?

Yes!  Many volunteers fundraise for trips.  You can find information and tips on how to fundraise on your Volunteer Resources page on the IMR website.  You will have access to a personal fundraising page with a unique URL that you can share with family, friends, business associates, and any potential donors via social media.   IMR is a 501(c)3 charity, and all donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Are there any important dates I need to know?
      • IMR Group Flight: In order to qualify for the IMR Group Flight, you will need to reach 50% of the required donation on or before Dec 24th, 2019.
      • Early Bird Special: A discount of $200 is awarded to team members who raise / pay 50% of the required donation on or before Dec 24th, 2019.

Yes!  We encourage our volunteers to extend their stay and explore.  Extending your stay also puts money into the economies of these developing countries!

A service that we are very proud of at IMR is the preparation that each team and team member receives prior to the trip. This is one of the most important reasons that you should join an IMR team.

All team members have access to the IMR Volunteer Resources page where you may view and download important conference calls, a detailed briefing packet outlining the important elements that make a successful trip, packing lists, a checklist to keep you on track, and much more. You will find detailed information on how clinic operates, the roles on an IMR team, community health education topics, fundraising tips, and all of the materials our licensed providers need including best practices for providing care in short term medical clinics, public health information specific to the country you are traveling too, and a guide to the infectious diseases of that country.  You will also find a comprehensive country briefing packet that provides background information, cultural etiquette, common phrases, and links to additional information from a variety of sources on your volunteer resources page.  Finally, a departure packet that outlines how and where to meet your team will be sent just prior to departure and can be downloaded from the volunteer resources page.
