About The Mission Trip

trip_InfoAboutThe Vietnam you see today is steeped in ancient rites and traditions that have survived throughout the bumps and scrapes of history. It’s a place where handmade water puppets spin elaborate tales, singing kites soar overhead, highland markets promise the hope of love to young villagers, and Mekong River markets float. A passion for beauty flows from poetry and paintings, from palaces and pagodas. It’s a beauty rooted in the past and complimented by the natural surroundings of the present. Sharp-angled mountains, cloaked in dense foliage, jut from forest and sea. Impossibly long stretches of white sand shimmer under the warm afternoon sun. Lush vegetation masks rivers edge. Immense caves gulp seawater. Da Nang will reach out her hands and welcome you as you arrive to care for 100s of patients each day that live in the mountains and near the beaches of the famous Central Coast. Come hungry! The food is amazing!!

About Clinic

trip_InfoClinicYour team will focus on acute medical and dental needs and health education. As with every IMR team, your team will provide expert medical care (including labs, wound care, respiratory treatments, hydration, and medications) and classes on hand washing, oral hygiene, purification and storage of drinking water, family planning, safe sexual practices, stretching/pain management and more.. You will see families, the elderly, war victims, and vibrant young people. You will fall in love with your patients who will greet you shyly with their warm smiles, a gentle rubbing on your arm and cheek, and hugs and kisses to thank you for caring for them. There is beauty on every corner and in every face you see. The lined faces of the elderly will tell you a story and the hope in the young people will send you home ready to come back to Vietnam to share their passion once again.

Transportation & Lodging

trip_InfoLodgingYour team will work on the Central Coast of Vietnam You will have the opportunity to get to know two distinct cultures within this beautiful country as you travel out each day to small villages on the plains and in the mountains. Your team will stay in a modern hotel in Da Nang and in comfortable accommodations in the mountains. You will enjoy the most flavorful foods available in Vietnam, including mì quảng (rice noodles with turmeric and fish or meat), bún chả cá (fish ball noodle soup), bún mắm (seafood gumbo), cánh gà chiên mắm (fried chicken wings in fish sauce), and mít trộn (a salad mixed with jackfruit and pork rind). Don't miss the Pho - soup for breakfast is the only way to start the day - although the strong Vietnamese coffee, sweetened with thick condensed milk, isn't a bad way to start things off either!

Your ground transportation will be comfortable buses driven by safe and professional drivers. Sit back and enjoy the scenery!!

Trip Highlights

trip_InfoHighlightsWhile the most rewarding aspect of this trip will be caring for Vietnam’s rural residents, many of whom suffered terribly during the French and the American Wars. You’ll also care for beautiful families on this trip! You'll find their gratitude overwhelming and many of their conditions challenging and complicated. If you ask, you will also hear their stories and learn much about life in rural Vietnam.

The team will visit the ancient port city of Hoi An, with a visit to the local market and a view of the river. The market offers a wide variety of goods sold by many different vendors, including clothing, silk, jewelry, flowers, and foodstuffs such as dried fruit and fish, plus coffee, tea, and wine. Sellers are eager but polite, asking you to make them lucky today with a sale and a smile! You'll see the wondrous caves of the Marble Mountains and spend time in Hue, where the magnificent Tombs of the Ancient Emperors and the Tu Hieu Pagoda can’t be missed. What could be better?

December 28, 2019 - Arrivals

You and the team will fly into the Da Nang International Airport in Da Nang, Vietnam on December 28th and transfer to your hotel. The required arrival to your hotel is 5:00pm on December 28th. If you are flying on an IMR group flight or you have prearranged transportation with IMR, your airport transportation will be provided for you. Meet your team for dinner and get to know everyone - it is going to be a busy week!
Meals included: Dinner

December 29, 2019 - Team Orientation and Transfer to Tra My

Wake up to breakfast provided to you at the hotel and attend the required team orientation to further prepare you for clinic! Your team leader will assign your roles for clinic, go over our clinic protocols, and discuss the communities you will be serving in Vietnam. Following the meeting, you will transfer to Tra My a rural area about 3 hours from Da Nang. You'll visit the famous Marble Mountains (a UNESCO World Heritage site) on the way - take the stairs or ride the lift because exploring this place is pretty amazing! We'll take a few minutes for a stop at the marble factory and a little shopping followed by some time to sightsee in Hoi An, a 500 year old trading port and anotherUNESCO World Heritage site. Dinner and a clean and simple local hotel will be waiting for you in Tra My, about 2 hours away!
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

December 30, 2019 - Clinic in Tra My

You will see families, the very young, and the very old on this trip. Many will have lived through the "American War" years and some through the "French War" years but all will be greatly in need of care. This is a rural area far from the big city - and the lack of access to care is clear. During clinic you will be able to provide comprehensive medical care, reading glasses (in great demand), health education, and more - be prepared for chronic illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes in addition to the acutely ill. Return to your hotel for dinner and debrief to talk over the day.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

January 31, 2020 - Clinic in Tra My

Day 2 of clinic is always busier than Day 1! The air will be filled with the excited voices of the children and the grateful thank you's of the elderly as they say “cảm ơn nhiều lắm” to formally thank you for your care. You'll be so impressed by your elderly patients' stoic and calm demeanor and enthralled by the grins of the children and the embarrassed smiles of the hip teenagers that come in for your expert advice. Dinner, a team debrief, and bed awaits - but it is New Year's Eve, so who knows what's about to happen!!
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

January 1, 2020 - Clinic in Tra My and return to Da Nang

Today will be your last clinic day in Tra My. We'll close a bit early and head back to Da Nang in the afternoon, stopping at the My Son Sanctuary on the way back. You'll return to your Da Nang hotel (which feels like home!) and get ready for your last 2 days of clinic tonight. Time is flying!

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

January 2, 2020 - Clinic in Hue

Your clinic for the next 2 days will be about 2 hours from Da Nang on the banks of the beautiful Perfume River. Hue is an ancient city and we’ll take a few minutes to see some of the important pagodas and taste what many consider to be the best food in all of Vietnam.

Many elderly will attend the clinic along with those severely impacted by the wars and loss. Your medical and dental skills will be of great comfort to these people. Before you get on the bus, take a short walk to the beautiful rice paddies and take some photos! Upon returning to your hotel join your team for dinner and a debrief!

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

January 3, 2020 - Clinic in Hue

Today is your last clinic day and every patient will be sad to see you go. We'll debrief when we return to the hotel and you will have time to shower and change. This evening we will take a walk through some of the great areas of Da Nang, close by our hotel.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

January 4, 2020

Today the day is yours to relax or explore your surroundings!

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

January 5, 2020 - Departures home

You will depart any time during the day or evening on January 5th for home. If you can, leave late! Take a few hours to explore Da Nang or head to the beach. The day today is all yours. If you are flying on the IMR group flight, your airport transportation has been arranged for you. You'll be ready for work and school on Monday but very sad to not be in Vietnam! Come back soon - you are now part of the IMR family.

If you are flying independently and want to arrange for transportation to the airport, please contact travel@worldwidenavigators.com. You'll be ready for work and school on Monday but very sad to not be in Vietnam! Come back soon - you are now part of the IMR family.

IMR provides a personal and customizable fundraising page to all registered trip applicants. We provide a fundraising packet that is full of ideas on how you can raise support or supplies to be utilized on this specific mission. You may download this information and individual items such as letters requesting support, our 501(c)3 information, and a list of needed supplies from your Volunteer Resources page. When soliciting donations for any of our trips, your personal story is your most powerful tool. Why do you want to go? Whom will you help? How will your donors help you achieve your ultimate goal? Tell your story to anyone and everyone. Refer your potential or active donors to your IMR personal fundraising page by sharing your unique URL on social media, via email, and through personal contact. Give your supporters our website and Facebook page so they can see the great things that IMR has accomplished since our founding in 2002. Did you know we have cared for almost 300,000 patients in the last 16 years? We need your help and the help of your donors to see 300,000 more patients in the years ahead!

What will the team be doing on the trip?

IMR teams provide medical and dental care and community health education to communities that lack access to care. A typical IMR team consists of doctors, dentists, and advanced practice providers, nurses, EMTs, medical/dental/nursing students, pre-med students, and non-medical volunteers. The team makeup for your trip is not guaranteed to be as described above and is dependent on the individual volunteers who make up your team. The team usually stays in a central location and travels each day to a different community to set up a mobile medical and dental clinic. In order to promote lasting and sustainable improvements in the health of those communities, IMR conducts an extensive community health education program, teaching about prevention and treatment in small groups and during individual consultations with providers. No matter what your specialty or skill level, there is a job for you on an IMR trip!

Can I fundraise for the trip?

Yes! Many volunteers fundraise for trips. You can find information and tips on how to fundraise on your Volunteer Resources page on the IMR website. You will have access to a personal fundraising page with a unique URL that you can share with family, friends, business associates, and any potential donors via social media. IMR is a 501(c)3 charity, and all donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Trip Preparation

A service that we are very proud of at IMR is the preparation that each team and team member receives prior to the trip. This is one of the most important reasons that you should join an IMR team.

All team members have access to the IMR Volunteer Resources page where you may view and download important conference calls, a detailed briefing packet outlining the important elements that make a successful trip, packing lists, a checklist to keep you on track, and much more. You will find detailed information on how clinic operates, the roles on an IMR team, community health education topics, fundraising tips, and all of the materials our licensed providers need including best practices for providing care in short term medical clinics, public health information specific to the country you are traveling too, and a guide to the infectious diseases of that country. You will also find a comprehensive country briefing packet that provides background information, cultural etiquette, common phrases, and links to additional information from a variety of sources on your volunteer resources page. Finally, a departure packet that outlines how and where to meet your team will be sent just prior to departure and can be downloaded from the volunteer resources page.

IMR applicants and team members are also able to join in two informational calls: About IMR and How Clinic Operates/Provider Guidelines. A Q and A call just prior to departure helps to ensure that you have the most important information and are ready to go! If you can't join our live calls, you can listen at any time via your Volunteer Resources page. Your team's departure call will be recorded by and sent by email to the team immediately following the call.

All of our volunteers have access to a personal IMR fundraising page with a unique URL that can be emailed and shared with family, friends, business associates, and other potential donors.

Did you know you can earn CME credits on line with IMR? www.cmeonline.net will get you to 6 1 hour courses containing great tips for treating a variety of conditions in the field including wounds, hypertension, dengue fever, and more.

Most importantly, we are always here to answer your questions or help you complete your application. It is our goal that we exceed your expectations for preparation, patient care, and your overall trip. Let us know how we can help and how we did!
