Zambia Refugee Trip - Medical Relief COMPLETE

Zambia Refugee Trip

November 30, 2019 - December 8, 2019

About The Mission Trip

trip_InfoAbout**We have extended the Early Bird for this trip to September 28th, 2019!

Refugee camps, primarily for those escaping the Congo, have been established in Zambia for many years.  Some of the largest camps in Africa are located there and Zambia welcomes these refugees and asylum-seekers.  As with many large refugee camps, they tend to become permanent settlements of the very poor, without many services.  This is especially true for those refugees who don't gain a permanent place in the camp itself but instead live on the outside in what can only be described as shantytowns.

We need your help.  This is a trip to care for the uncared for, the unthought of, and the desperately ill.  Dental care is non-existent.   IMR has worked in the transit centers, where new arrivals are held and processed, and this will be our first trip to the camp at the invitation of the government of Zambia.

This will be the trip that you will talk about forever.  Please join us in the field - we know that the dates are close - but we ask that you join us.  Humanitarian effort is cherished by those who receive it. Please help IMR make this amazing trip happen for the first trip in our new division of caring for refugees around the world.

This Signature option offers volunteers the option to stay at upgraded accommodation in Safari Lodges nearby and includes a complete African safari! You will also be invited to participate in some special activities such as a visit to a local village to meet the chief and experience life in Zambia as the locals do. A stop at a market to shop for some local goodies and even a visit to a local hospital!

About Clinic

trip_InfoClinicYour impact will go beyond your expectations within the borders of this refugee camp!  Clinics are always filled with families, the elderly, pregnant women, and the very sick in Zambia.  This is one of the busiest places we go! The need for dental care and eye care is very high, as is the need for general practice dermatology, and more.  You will also have a chance to see firsthand what life is like inside Zambia's largest refugee camp and can provide to the thousands of people under their care.  Your translators are dental students, personally selected for service by our ground team leader, a professor at the dental school.

Transportation & Lodging

trip_InfoLodgingYou will be staying in a comfortable and well-equipped hotel during the duration of your stay in Solwezi Zambia where you will be able to relax and unwind after clinic days. All meals aside from clinic lunches will be served at your hotel.  All transportation to and from clinic sites will be included and provided by safe, trustworthy drivers. Travel times to clinics are very reasonable and you will see much of how the people of Zambia live in the rural areas during your drives to the refugee camp each day.

Trip Highlights

trip_InfoHighlightsZambia is the only country in the world to have entered the Olympic Games as one country and left as another, after declaring independence from the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland on the last day of the Summer Olympics in 1964. Formerly Northern Rhodesia until its declaration of independence, Zambia is now a democratic republic, an English-speaking country in the heart of Africa, with more than seventy diverse tribes. Its culture manages to blend many disparate values and spiritual beliefs into a single country.

English is the official language of Zambia, and many people we meet and care for will speak English. However, 52% of the population speaks Bemba and 37% speak Nyanja as a primary or secondary language, so having excellent translators is paramount to our success. This trip will truly introduce you to Zambia!

Poverty, however, is rampant in Zambia, healthcare almost non-existent, and education ends at the primary level for almost 75% of children in the country. Zambia is unlike any of the African countries you may have visited. With a strong Asian influence and a diverse population of young people, Zambia is one of the most vibrant cultures on the continent. People are amicable, warm, and present themselves as you see them. This simplicity of life is unforgettable.

Does all this sound like a tall order? It gets bigger as you embark on a safari to seek out some of the most majestic animals in the world at a beautiful park right outside of Solwezi. Your safari will take place at a private game ranch in Kalumbila where you will have the opportunity to spot some of Africa's native wildlife! You will also have the opportunity to witness one of our favorite activities in Zambia - a cultural dance! Zambian Traditional Dances The 78 different tribes that make up the fabric of traditional Zambia society provide a rich tapestry of traditional music and dance.

Extend Your Stay

trip_InfoExtendedStayYour venturing halfway across the globe, have you considered extending your stay a few days to visit some of Zambia's top spots?

Join IMR on an exclusive extension to Victoria Falls and Chobe National Park. Stand in awe of your surroundings while you experience the wonderland sculpted by Earth’s natural elements. Victoria Falls is classified as the largest sheet of falling water in the world and is roughly twice the height and width of Niagara Falls. Livingstone also cites the older name of Seongo, which translates to “the place of the rainbow” as a result of the immense and constant spray. If you’re lucky you may spot one of the many hippopotamus or crocodile that call the river home.

Since you’re already halfway around the world it would be a shame to miss on neighboring Botswana’s first and most biologically diverse national park. Chobe National Park has one the the greatest concentrations of game in all of Africa. Keep your eyes peeled on your private safari in search for the park’s noted population of lions and African elephants!

Why their donation can help you achieve the ultimate goal. Tell your story to anyone and everyone. You may share your IMR personal fundraising URL on Facebook and other social media sites.

Safety & Security

We take security very seriously at IMR.  It is our job to ensure that security precautions are in place, but please keep in mind that we cannot guarantee your safety on the trip.

  • We continuously review all current activities occurring on the ground, and we work with the State Department and the U.S. Embassy to know the ground situation to the best of our ability.
  • We have a security training conference call with our volunteers where we detail our security procedures that are in place for the trip.
  • We take many security precautions such as radios, a buddy system, and security planning.
  • We provide you with an email address that you can give to the people you meet to protect your privacy until you determine that you want to remain in contact with team.
  • We rely on our teams to be cognizant of their own safety and to be aware of their surroundings.
  • We have several policies in place that we require the team to adhere to for their safety and that of the team as a whole.

Trip Preparation

A service that we are very proud of at IMR is the preparation that each team and team member receives prior to the trip. This is one of the most important reasons that you should join an IMR team.

All team members receive a detailed briefing packet outlining the important elements that make a successful trip, packing lists, and a checklist to keep you on track. You will receive detailed information on how clinic operates, the roles on an IMR team, community health education topics, fundraising, and access to a personal IMR fundraising page. Best practices for providing care in short term medical clinics, public health information specific to the country you are traveling too, and a guide to the infectious diseases of that country will be shared with the team. You will also receive a comprehensive country briefing packet that provides background information, cultural etiquette, common phrases, and links to additional information from a variety of sources. Finally, a departure packet that outlines how and where to meet your team will be sent just prior to departure.

IMR applicants and team members will also have access to a series of phone conferences where you will learn about specific aspects of IMR trips and 2 Q and A calls where you can ask questions specific to your trip. There will also be a Q and A call just prior to departure to help ensure that you have the most important information and are ready to go!

Most importantly, we are always here to answer your questions or help you complete your application. It is our goal that we exceed your expectations for preparation, patient care, and your overall trip. Let us know how we can help and how we did!

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the donation amount include?

The donation amount covers the cost of lodging, meals, and transportation while you are in the country, and clinic supplies/medications for our patients. If you are eligible for and choose the Subsidized IMR Flight, your donation amount also includes the cost of your international airfare. Costs that are not included in the donation amount are your passport, travel visas (if applicable), domestic airfare to the group departure city, vaccinations, and insurance. You also have the option of flying on your own directly from your hometown and meeting up with the team in country. IMR gives you the option of purchasing your own tickets, which decreases your minimum donation amount. It also gives you the opportunity to extend your stay to do some sightseeing after the trip, and fly directly from your home city to your final destination.

What will the team be doing on the trip?

IMR teams provide medical care and community health education to communities that lack access to care. A typical IMR team consists of doctors, nurses, EMTs, medical/nursing students, pre-med students, and non-medical volunteers. We strive to have a dental team on every trip as well. The team usually stays in a central location and travels each day to a different community to set up a mobile medical clinic. In order to promote lasting and sustainable improvements in the health of those communities, IMR conducts an extensive community health education program in each area as well. No matter what your specialty or skill level, there is a job for you on an IMR trip!

Can I fundraise for the trip?

Yes!  Many volunteers fundraise for trips.  Once your references are approved, IMR will send a fundraising packet that contains information on how the personalized fundraising page on the IMR website works.  It also contains some great ideas for fundraising events and other ways to fundraise for the trip.  IMR is a 501(c)3 charity, and all donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Are there any important dates I need to know?
